Ask most people to define the perfect levels of comfort within the
workplace and they would probably say a Herman Miller chair, a decent heating system and some reliable
air conditioning. Most of us seem to know that any temperature between 18 & 22 degrees centigrade is
comfortable. Some of us are aware that 56% humidity is not too wet and not too dry.

Very few people would be
able to quote any figure relating to sound

Acoustics are a mystery to most of us, yet we all know how distracting the noise can be in a minimally
designed restaurant. The surfaces may be durable, but chrome, glass and marble cause sound to ping-pong
from one hard surface to another. And before you all start rushing to install American Black Walnut, wood
is no better.
All these materials are now used extensively in contemporary buildings. They intensify noise levels to
fever pitch and add pressure to the already high stress levels within today’s workplace.
The American Society of Interior Designers found in their research that 70% of all office workers stated
that they would be much more productive in a less noisy environment. So how can you keep the look but
deaden the sound? Bare walls are bad news. They are dull to look at and an external wall has an absorption
index of 0.03. Given that 0 = 0% efficiency, it doesn’t take an acoustician to tell you that large areas of
bare wall pose a problem. Hanging pictures helps, unless of course they are behind glass, in which case you’re
not really any better off.
